In a recent press release around ‘Ansible lightspeed for AI-Driven IT information’, where ansible is the adopted approach for automation, it recognises that businesses are being pushed to do more with less. This combined with the IDC predictions about IT skill shortages in the next few years, means now is a great time to review your current skills and look to optimise your existing processes.
Have you started automating some of those repeatable tasks? This could be something as simple as creating a user on a system, to provisioning a RHEL instance or IBMi system in a matter of minutes, creating an application server install and profile, deploying an application and having the application automatically configured. This could be either be on-premises, cloud or even as part of a hybrid cloud strategy.
Red Hat Ansible has two ansible repositories, with one being Red Hat certified and the other one being ansible galaxy (driven by a large community). These repositories contain thousands of collections, including specific ones for IBM around IBMi & AIX to networks and many other areas containing sample playbooks with great documentation. Not only are they incredibly useful and reusable but as they are managed under source control (normally with git on GitHub), which most businesses have started to adopt. Therefore, as businesses are adopting their hybrid cloud strategy, it seems only logical for the provision of infrastructure to also be under source control with either ansible playbooks and/or terraform. These can provide repeatable provisioning of infrastructure and give the flexibility to spin up a partition in minutes rather than weeks as well as predicting costs. Once you have your playbooks that you are running manually, why not consider ansible automation controller and start on a journey to repeatable automated workflows.
A few common use cases for IaC are:
– A new test environment
– Carrying out OS upgrades and patches
– Creating a DR partition
